The former residence of Cai Yuanpei

Cai Yuanpei (January 11, 1868 - March 5, 1940), styled Heqing, also known as Zhongshen, Minyou and Jiemin. His childhood name was Apei, and he once used the aliases Cai Zhen and Zhou Ziyu. He was of the Han ethnic group, a native of Shanyin County (present-day Shaoxing County) in Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province, and his ancestral home was Zhuji, Zhejiang.

He was a revolutionary, an educator and a statesman. He was the first Minister of Education of the Republic of China. From 1916 to 1927, he served as the president of Peking University, where he reformed the university and initiated the trend of "academics" and "freedom". From 1920 to 1930, Cai Yuanpei also served as the president of the Sino-French University simultaneously.
