The former site of the Station Hotel

The former site of the Station Hotel in Qingdao, also known as the Front Station Hotel, was built in 1913 and designed by the German R. Matveich. It is two stories high, with an attic and dormer windows. The exterior wall features decorative pediments, and the gable is in the Neo-Baroque style. The main entrance is located at the corner, above which is an octagonal tower with a tapering spire. It forms a perfect visual counterpoint with the 35-meter-high station bell tower opposite the station square. The building has an external corridor. The geometric patterns on the corridor railing belong to the Late Gothic style, with bladder-like patterns. This kind of pattern was often used as a decorative motif in later German Neo-Renaissance style buildings. In the 1920s, it ceased to be a hotel and became a residential house. From the 1930s until 2001, before the renovation of this old building, it had always been a dormitory building for railway workers. Now it is a gathering place for several local snack shops.
