Classic Off the beaten path and Artistic Spots in Qingdao

University Road & Yushan Road

The intersection here has  become a new popular landmark for taking photos. On the two red walls, one side reads "University Road" and the other reads "Yushan Road". Taking pictures at the corner of the wall can capture the names of both roads. Don't follow my example; I didn't take pictures at the corner.

How to get there: When taking a taxi or car - hailing, directly set the destination as the intersection of University Road and Yushan Road. The nearest subway station is People's Hall Station, and it's only a 150 - meter walk.

Huangxian Road

There are many artistic coffee shops on Huangxian Road. Well - known ones like Little Witch and Giraffe Coffee are located on this road. The decorations at the entrance of these shops are very distinctive. It's a very refreshing and photogenic road.

Lao She's Former Residence is also on this street. Opening hours are from 9:00 - 16:30, Tuesday - Sunday; entry stops at 16:00, and it's closed on Monday.

How to get there: It's very close. Just walk a short distance from the intersection of University Road and Yushan Road.

Jiangsu Road Christian Church

This church was a place I failed to visit during my trip to Qingdao five years ago due to various reasons. After having food on Zhongshan Road, I deliberately walked there. It's not far to walk, and in autumn, Qingdao is quite cool as long as you avoid direct sunlight.

On the way to the Christian Church, the corner of Dexian Road and Yishui Road is very beautiful. I also passed by the former site of the Jiaozhou - Qingdao Governor's Mansion on the way.

How to get there: Take buses No. 1, 214, 217, 220 (air - conditioned), 221, 225 (loop line), 228, 231 (loop line), 367, Tunnel Bus No. 1, and Tunnel Bus No. 5, and get off at the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University stop.

Former Site of the German Governor's Mansion

The Former Site of the German Governor's Mansion Museum is the best representative of the German - occupied period in Qingdao. In terms of architectural structure, interior decoration, and various details, it represents the peak of German architecture at that time. There are many rooms and pieces of furniture for visitors to view inside, but photography is not allowed.

How to get there: Take buses No. 217, 220 (air - conditioned), or 221 and get off at Longjiang Road stop, then walk about 200 meters to reach it. Or take Metro Line 3, get off at People's Hall Station, and then walk to get there.

Signal Hill Park

It's a great place to overlook the panoramic view of Qingdao. It got its name because a signal tower for guiding ships was built on the top of the hill. Walking up the steps all the way, Signal Hill is not very high, and it's easy to climb up.

The iconic big red ball on Signal Hill looks very bright against the blue sky.

How to get there: Take buses No. 228, 231, 225, etc., and get off at the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University stop.

Qingdao Post and Telecommunications Museum

It's near the Zhanqiao Pier. It sells postcards and also offers postcard - mailing services. There are also exhibitions of communication equipment from different periods.

Liangyou Bookstore

For some reason, there are two Liangyou Bookstores less than ten meters apart. I visited both. One is Tower 1901, which requires going to the top floor. The other is the one on the ground floor by the roadside. I'm not sure if they belong to the same establishment, but both are well worth a visit.
